Corporate political responsibility, political hostility, and the integrity threshold behind selective engagement and greenhushing (2026)

John Balabanis, Georgiana Grigore

This project examines the “double bind” facing organizations during periods of social, political or economic turmoil, when stakeholders often expect companies to both take a stand on contentious issues and remain neutral at the same time. Drawing on stakeholder and corporate communication theory, this project investigates how organizations can navigate these competing expectations, identify the conditions under which different communication strategies are most effective and better understand the reputational risks associated with corporate silence or advocacy.
